🔥 Mr Sarcasm; St John is possibly one of the most sarcastic people going, a lot of his wit his based in his sarcasm, he faces serious and dangerous situations with a sarcastic comment just as much as he will light-hearted situations. Sometimes, it is a cover for his state of mind, St John occasionally ends up in far too deep for what he actually wants, but the sarcasm as a defence has become second nature that he'll never admit it's not just what it is.
🔥 Old Soul; the kid is jaded obnoxious and arrogant with a surprisingly sharp tongue. He's been through a fair amount for a twenty-something year old, having seen the darker side of humanity and of mutants if he honest. It's made him very self-dependent really, since he knows that people aren't always going to stick by you. He'll push people to their edge just to test how far they'll stick it out. He doesn't trust easily, and he doesn't like a lot of people either.
🔥 Concealed Smarts; while he gives off the appearance of not giving a damn about anything, he is actually a rather intelligent person, even with only a basic level of school education. St John reads well, speaks well when he chooses to, and has a skill for writing. So much so that he regularly submits pieces of journalistic work for publishing in local papers and has a quite successful, if secret, career from gothic romance novels -as he'll say if it ever comes up in conversation, crap sells. Despite the way he brushes it off, St John actually has many layers; he's a liar and a smart ass, prone to being downright mean to keep people from getting too close. But he can't help but care about the people he ends up in closest proximity too -he still has a few people at the Xavier Institute he respects and won't really put his all into fighting.
🔥 Anarchist; he hates authority, in a very violent way, but he can tolerate it when it's working in his favour, because St John is not meant to be any kind of leader, ever. His temper along with a rather dark sense of humour tends to mean he lashes out in rather childish ways at times, but he does tend to toe the line with certain mentor types.
🔥 Recklessly Powerful; maintaining his 'badass' reputation through the cavalier use of his powers, so far as to be reckless and careless, St John had a tendency to use his powers for the smallest of things. Encouragement to use them at will is what really gets St John's attention, while his admonishment of use for trivial reasons often struck him as hiding away; St John has absolutely no time for mutants who don't use their powers of complain about them.
🔥 Reluctant Loner; St John tries to keep from making connections to people, he's been let down time and again and his life before made friends something he never had to deal with. He likes to project his 'I don’t care' attitude, when really all he wants is some sort of security, even just the security of someone wanting him for his powers. With deep-seated abandonment issues and a temper that sometimes flares wildly out of control, St John can be a force to be reckoned with, but remove his 'safety blanket' of lighters and you’ll have a fidgety mutant ready to snap.
🔥 Emotionally Disconnected; St John, although being a closet romantic in a rather loose term, does not usually form romantic attachments. While St John is able forge friendships, he tends to keep them very casual, stopping himself from depending on anyone or forming close attachments. Friendships with some benefits are not out of the question, but St John doesn't like leaving himself vulnerable in any manner or appearing vulnerable in any manner. Depending on someone else, emotionally or physically, is not something St John is prone to doing; he keeps himself closed off emotionally, using sarcasm as a shield. If and when St John ever finds himself in a relationship, there will likely be a mild freak out shortly afterwards.
🔥 Anti-social Hermit; the term anti-social could've been coined just for St John. It's not so much that he prefers his own company as much as he is socially awkward and rather dislikes it. Having never had a stable environment or constant contact with the same people beyond his neglectful father, St John isn't always sure just what he isn't supposed to say or do in most situations. To this extent, he tends to avoid socialising with groups and will instead look to simple one on one conversation.
He doesn't share information openly, but has a few keen interests that will get him talking. Shared interests just as much as difference of opinions can ease him into a more comfortable state for conversation, although if he feels like he's giving away too much, he clams up rather quickly.
Born into a rather strained relationship, St John was Martin Allerdyce and Kelly Hold's only child, born in North Carolina and living there for only three months before his mother walked out of her strained, tired, dead relationship and his father started moving him around. St John grew up with his degenerate gambler father, moving from town to town, working their way across states. Early life was considerably lonely for St John, his father usually out at a casino or gambling somewhere while John took care of himself. Bumping from place to place, enrolling in school after school, St John was never in one place long enough to make friends, so he stopped trying, growing sarcastic and abrasive to stop people trying to make friends with him.
Living in barely heated or furnished old run down apartments or houses, usually squatting and with no water, John got used to the hard life, never having the nicer things meant never missing them. St John was twelve and in Baton Rouge when his powers kicked in. During a god-awful heat wave in August, John’s body temperature soared to almost fatal heights. Without his father around, John sought help at a nearby free clinic. After being shooed out, mutant prejudice telling him what he was before a diagnosis, John spent his days trying to discover what his power was.
After a freak accident, John finally discovered that fire would answer his call. He became moderately obsessed with the feel of fire around him, enjoying the sensation of flames licking at his hand. He took to stealing lighters at every given opportunity, continuing to test himself while his father was away and growing more confident in his abilities. St John was in New York when loan sharks visited him and his father at their 'rented' apartment. Following a severe beating, John left his father, heading for the streets and taking only a backpack with a change of clothes and his now ever present lighter.
John spent his time on the streets mostly alone, fending for himself and getting shelter where he could. He took shelter in abandoned buildings, churches and broke into offices or libraries. With a string of minor charges to his name by the time he hit eighteen, St John was used to the street life and hardened to suit it. Following an intense street riot by the fairly popular Friends of Humanity, St John got into yet another altercation with New York city police. Close to being arrested again, St John ended up being rescued by some member of faculty from the Xavier’s Institute, taken to the school and trying to integrate into the normal school life. But John was still very standoffish, he didn’t get along with any one, often had bursts of temper and constantly argued with the authority. After a year, having made but a handful of acquaintances he would shakily refer to as 'friends', St John got into yet more trouble for his continued misuse of powers.
For a while, John was paired up with Bobby Drake, in an apparent attempt to curb his 'behavioural' problems with Drake's good boy shtick. For a while it went okay, their powers were opposites so they were often paired up to train. Bobby managed to chill some of St John's tendencies and John tried to get Bobby to stop being such a suck up. The twosome became a threesome when Rogue joined the school, after a shaky start and Bobby making moon eyes for long enough, the pair ended up in a super weird no-touching relationship. Stuff really got tense when the school was attacked and John, Bobby, Rogue and Logan had to skip out in one of Scott's cars to shake off the Government. Throw in the Brotherhood leaders Magneto and Mystique basically telling John his use of his powers was totally normal and letting Xavier tell him otherwise was stupid, John basically peaced out on the school and left with Magneto and Mystique.
It was the cure that changed things all over again. Magneto went off on a recruiting spree after Mystique was dealt with the cure, leaving her behind. They ended up with an army of mutants to take on the lab that was building the threat against mutant kind, destroying the Golden Gate bridge and forcing an all out battle brawl on Alcatraz with the X-Men and a slightly batshit Jean Grey back from the dead. To say it went poorly would be an understatement. Magneto got cured, Jean got dead and John got a concussion and brain freeze that lasted weeks. He escaped Alcatraz and imprisonment (or worse, curing) by the skin of his teeth before blending in with people and slinking off to figure out what to do next.
John ended up living mostly on the streets, keeping his head low save from when certain things cropped up that really set off his anger. Then he usually had to move to somewhere new before the X-Geeks popped in to see what he was doing or set out to capture. To make money, John used internet cafes to submit pieces of writing to certain newspapers, becoming a somewhat successful journalist. In the year John was in Providence, he managed fairly well to make a decent living under an assumed name. With two novels -which he would always refer to as chick-flick junk- St John had enough money to rent himself a run down apartment. Hardly decent, but shelter. Until an anti-mutant demonstration rubbed him the wrong way and Pyro created a blanket of flame over a nearby shopping centre. Although he was arrested with nine other people, St John wasn't identified as the perpetrator or a mutant. It was when he was released from the police station that he decided to leave Providence and ended up in Boston, trying to lay low and make his own way. It lasted another few months before St John got news that somehow the cure wasn't permanent and the Magneto was sending out word for the Brotherhood to reform. Weighing up the options, St John wasn't sure just what he wanted to do.
🔥 He hates the name 'Johnny' and will threaten death by fire to anyone who uses it. Johnny was what his father called him constantly. Johnny was very rarely used in any kind of affectionate or caring manner and was more of a slur than anything else. Because of this, and because his mother bailed on him early in life, St John tends to hate his name and prefers to just be called John or Pyro. Very, very few people get away with calling him Johnny, although some know that he hates it and use it to rile him up.
🔥 Largely, John gets agitated without a lighter handy. The fact that he requires a catalyst to use his power tends to be a touchy subject for him, but he's almost always got a single lighter on him at the very least. For a long time he spent every day with a book of matches in his shoe just so that he had that access to at least a single spark. Now he's upgraded from the shark head zippo to a plain silver zippo and a half dozen disposable bic lighters.
🔥 From past experiences, John has a lot of issues with contact and his personal space. He's rarely had positive physical contact, so for the most part he's prone to flinching from it. Staying at Xavier's did some repair to that, given that it was boasted as a safe space minus unpredictable powers and puberty, but there was never conscious attempts towards harm by any means. Returning to the streets just meant that John had to get used to it being a no again.
🔥 John doesn't drink much. His dad was a rather mean drunk and John hated that he was almost always drunk anyway. His experiences with authority figures plus alcohol have never been good so he associates it with people losing control. It doesn't help that the one time her did drink his powers were exceptionally unpredictable and he managed to burn himself for the first time ever.
🔥 Recently, John started writing gothic romance novels in secret, under an assumed name. It was an easy way to kill some time and turned out to be a money maker. Even if he's not broadly selling tonnes of books because he's almost all online thanks to things like needing publishers and shit, it still generates enough of an income on online sales that he can afford to actually have a roof over his head for a while.
🔥 St John has a lot of biases. He doesn't like authority figures because each and every one in his life has been a total shit and either given up, abused him, or abandoned him. He doesn't like humans because it's been knocked into his head that, as a mutant, he's better than baseline humans, he's different, but not less. It's harder to see when so many of those so called better mutants are fucking up in so many ways. Generally, John's not too fond of people in general really, struggling to deal with other people's bullshit on a larger scale, or with the conflicting views. He's rather stubborn in many of his views.
Fire Manipulation; St John can shape and mould fire to his command; he can manipulate the size, shape, intensity and the density of the flames. A steady stream of fire is not required and St John can manipulate any fire within his sight; he can take control of an already burning fire and turn it into a small burn or a larger inferno. He has limited range of control and requires concentration to maintain the fire directly proportionate to the size and intensity of the fire and it's vicinity.
Fire Absorption; While St John possesses the ability to absorb partially the fire he controls, he can become overtaxed quickly by the intensity of the flame and it does injure him. St John also has a higher than normal body temperature because of his power and is more susceptible to cold weather than others. When St John absorbs any fire, his temperature spikes higher; while his organs can handle an elevated temperature most of the time, constant fever temperatures will damage his internal organs.
Limitations; St John cannot create his fire, a source is always required to give fuel to the fire in which he controls. While he can maintain fire without a constant stream of fuel, St John cannot make fire without it. Similarly, St John need to see the fire in order to control it, while he can 'feel' the source and the supply, St John cannot exhibit control over the fire until he can see it. When not in control of a fire, St John can face the same injuries that any other person can. If he loses control or concentration, St John will be burned like anyone else.
Equipment; St John is always in possession of numerous lighters on his person, his favourite being a plain, silver cased Zippo lighter. Additionally, St John keeps a book of matches in one pocket, three Bic lighters in his coat and a further dozen in his backpack along with supplies for his Zippo.
